NPC meets on security of telecom installations

KABUL (Pajhwok): Chairing a special meeting of the National Procurement Commission, President Ashraf Ghani has asked the authorities concerned to ensure security of telecom firms’ installations in districts and provinces.

The extraordinary meeting which took place at the Presidential Palace late Tuesday discussed security of telecommunication system, said a statement from the Palace.

The meeting reviewed three procurement contracts concerning the Ministry of Telecommunications and Information Technology (MCIT) and approved the projects worth more than seven million afghanis after some discussion, the source said.

The commission also approved GSM cellular network for the Afghan Telecom Company for expanding its capacity.

A suggestion of the Afghan Telecom regarding bill payment in foreign currencies was also approved by the NPC, the statement said.

President Ashraf Ghani said telecommunications in districts and provinces had direct impact on the country’s security situation and security of the telecommunication system should be maintained as soon as possible.

He ordered the MCIT and the Afghan Telecom to ensure telecom services were available in all 34 provinces of the country and return with their performance reports.
