Pakistan to convince Taliban into talks with US

KABUL.

Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi held out the assurance at meetings with US National Security Advisor John Bolton and Secretary of State Michael Pompeo.

After the meetings late on Wednesday Dawn quoted diplomatic sources as saying that even the discussion on India-Pakistan ties was also linked to the situation in Afghanistan.

The Trump administration believes that peace and stability will elude Afghanistan as long as India and Pakistan continue to fight for influence in the war-torn country.

At the two rounds of talks in Washington, the United States and Pakistan agreed on staying engaged to rebuild their bilateral relationship both view as important.

Qureshi met Bolton for 40 minutes at the White House before holding talks at the State Department with Pompeo. The second meeting too lasted 40 minutes, according to the daily.

“During the meeting, Qureshi and Bolton discussed Pakistan-US relations and the regional situation in South Asia,” said a brief statement. These two major issues also dominated talks at the State Department.

Pakistanis assured the US it would play a positive role in Afghanistan and would do whatever they could to help convince the Taliban to join the reconciliation process.

“But they want the US to address their concerns, too, particularly about India’s growing influence in Afghanistan,” the newspaper said.

In Islamabad, the Foreign Office said Qureshi supported America’s renewed efforts for a political solution to the Afghan conflict.

He reiterated Islamabad’s long-held position that there was no military solution to the situation in Kabul. Pakistan would continue to support efforts for an Afghan-owned and -led reconciliation process, the minister said.
