Police retake 40 Samangan villages from Taliban

AIBAK (Pajhwok): Police recaptured 40 villages from Taliban militants in Dara-i-Sauf Paeen district of northern Samangan province last night, paving the ground for elections in these villages, an official said on Monday.

Three Afghan local police personnel, including their commander, and two Taliban fighters were killed during the last night clashes, said police spokesman Munir Rahimi.

The Taliban attacked ALP posts in the district on Saturday night, forcing the forces to retreat and allowing the rebels to overrun 40 villages.

But on Sunday night, police recaptured these villages from insurgents in Maqsud locality and paved the ground for elections there, according to Rahimi.

The overnight clash left ALP commander Mohammad Aslam and two other ALP men and two Taliban insurgents dead.

However, the Taliban claimed capturing three check-posts and killing four ALP men and wounding as many in the nighttime attack.
