FARAH CITY (Pajhwok): Twenty-two police personnel have been killed, including two officials, and five others wounded as a result of clash in western Farah province, local officials said on Monday.
A police officer, who did not want to be named, told Pajhwok Afghan News that security forces, were heading in five personal vehicles to Jouin district to introduce new police chief Mohammad Iqbal on Sunday afternoon.
He said the security personnel faced a Taliban ambush in Takht-i-Tewsak village in limits of Farah City, the province capital.
Seventeen policemen, including new police chief Iqbal were killed and five others, including provincial deputy police chief Haji Qader Jan were wounded in the clash, he informed.
But Dadullah Qaneh, a member of provincial council, said 22 policemen, including unit commander, Shahbaz Bator and new district police chief were killed and Farah deputy police chief among five others wounded in the firefight.
Provincial hospital worker said 22 bodies and five wounded policemen had been brought to the hospital. He said the injured condition was critical.
Without going into details, police spokesman, Mohibullah Mohib, confirmed security forces and militants suffered casualties during the firefight.
Taliban spokesman Qari Yousuf Ahmadi claimed 20 security personnel were killed and four vehicles belonging policemen were destroyed during the attack.
