Residents worried as insecurity grows in Kunduz

KUNDUZ CITY (Pajhwok): Residents and their representatives on Monday expressed deep concern over growing insecurity in northern Kunduz province and claimed the Taliban militants were inching closer to the provincial capital.

The residents, members of the provincial council and members of the Meshrano Jirga or Senate attended a gathering with regard to recent surge in insecurity in the province.

Senator Abdullah Qirliz told the gathering that insecurity increased in the province due to security officials’ negligence.

“The security situation inside the city is bad, Taliban militants operate around two kilometers away from the city and all this is because of the negligence of security officials.”

Kunduz might fall to the Taliban militants again if strong attention was not paid to its security, the upper house member added.

Yousuf Ayubi, the provincial council chief, said security of the province was beyond security forces’ ability and reinforcements should be dispatched from Kabul to Kunduz in order to strength its security.

He warned if security officials continued to be negligent and the central government failed to ensure security in Kunduz, the people would start leaving their areas soon for safety.
“The security situation has been worse while security personnel are asleep, the Taliban militants have come closer to the city”, he concluded.

Bashir Ahmad, a resident of Kunduz City, the provincial capital, told Pajhwok that insecurity had deeply concerned local residents.

A number of other residents expressed similar views and urged the government to pay strong attention to Kunduz’s security situation.

Meanwhile, deputy police chief Col. Saifullah Mahzan said there were some issues within the police ranks but efforts were underway to resolve them at the earliest possible.

He did not provide details in this regard but said preparations had been made to change the situation soon and urged people to help security forces.

He said currently a large number of policemen were busy fighting against militants and as a result crimes had also increased in the city.
