Khalilzad briefs Afghan, UN officials on Doha talks

KABUL (Pajhwok): US Special Representative for Afghan Peace Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad has said no one had a monopoly on the diplomacy of peace and all have contributed to good discussions and new ideas.

Khalilzad held separate meetings with Afghanistan Chairman Karim Khalili, UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative Tadamichi Yamamoto and ambassadors of some countries in Kabul.

After the meetings, the diplomat said he had briefed the officials on the latest round of peace negotiations with Taliban representatives in Doha, the capital of Qatar.

On Monday, during a roundtable discussion with Afghan media professionals here, Khalilzad said ‘significant progress’ had been made at the meetings with the Taliban delegation in Doha.

“I just arrived from Doha. I spent several days there meeting the Taliban delegation. The latest meetings were much better than the previous ones.

“We made progress on vital issues in our discussions and agreed in principle on a couple of very important issue,” he claimed.

The US envoy said: “There is a lot more work to be done before we can say we have succeeded in our efforts, but I believe for the first time I can say that we have made significant progress.”
