JALALABAD (Pajhwok): The governor of eastern Nangarhar province on Thursday said no one would be allowed to create hurdles in the way of maintaining security, ensuring good governance and implementing uplift projects.
Governor Shah Mahmood Miakhel said this while a addressing a conference regarding the performance, achievements and problems of provincial civil and military organs during the past two months in Jalalabad, the provincial capital.
He said the day he assumed charge of the governorship, his priority had been to banish corruption from government departments and restore people’s trust and he had been successful to a great extent in this regard.
The governor said the commissary head at Torkham border town had been replaced and five officials of the department had been arrested and corruption of 40 million aghanis prevented.
Miakhek said he had been working in cooperation with all departments to curb corruption, insecurities and implement polio vaccination campaigns.
He said in order to maintain order he dismantled 116 illegal bus stands mostly run by powerful individuals in Jalalabad where traffic signals were made functional after many years.
During the past two months, the governor said he paid visits to seven districts where he practically launched some projects concerning good governance and reconstruction.
During this period, he added, security forces rescued six persons from their kidnappers, prevented a number of terrorist acts and seized thousands of kilograms of narcotics and explosives.
“Police and other security forces were able to confiscate 74 tons of drugs, arrest 337 individuals in connection with the drugs. The security forces also found and seized 11000 kilograms of explosives, preventing a number of terrorist activities,” the governor said.
During the past two months, major security operations were conducted in Lalpura and Sherzad districts, he said, adding the Lalpura district had been completely cleared of insurgents and the operation in Sherzad was still underway.
After the armed opposition was suppressed, they resorted to magnetic bomb attacks, but security forces were able to arrest eight Daesh and Taliban men in connection with the blasts.
Miakhel said so far no mafia group or powerful individuals had created problems towards measures being taken by his administration but warned if anyone did so they would be dealt with sternly.
