SCO Contact Group on Afghanistan meets in Bishkek

KABUL Contact Group, the foreign ministry in Bishkek said.

Salahuddin Rabbani and his Kyrgyz counterpart Chinghiz Aidarbekov co-chaired the meeting in Bishkek. It is the first time Afghanistan chairs a meeting of this nature.

The meeting was held on Friday as part of Kyrgyzstan’s chairmanship of SCO, the ministry said in a statement. The current situation in Afghanistan, the reconciliation process and cooperation among SCO members with Afghanistan came up for discussion.

“One of the key issues was the discussion of the draft roadmap for further actions by the SCO-Afghanistan Contact Group,” the statement added.

The SCO Contact Group was established in 2005, but its activities were suspended in 2009. The latest meeting is the third after group resuming its activities in 2017.

The previous meetings were held on Oct. 11, 2017 in Moscow and on May 28, 2018 in Beijing. In accordance with the established practice, the meeting is held at the level of deputy foreign ministers of SCO states and Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, Deputy Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Idrees Zaman met A. Gitesh Sarma, secretary (west) – Ministry of External Affairs of India.

The two sides exchanged views on the third round of SCO Contact Group meeting, trilateral talks among Afghanistan, China and India in Kabul and regional consensus on an Afghan-led peace process.

Preserving the gains of the last 18 years, holding of presidential elections and the importance of regional cooperation on peace in Afghanistan were also discussed.
