5 police killed, 6 wounded in Balkh firefight

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Five policemen have been killed and six others wounded in a Taliban attack in northern Balkh province, an official said on Thursday.

Police spokesman Adel Shah Adel told Pajhwok Afghan News that the incident took place in the Marsurakh area of Khulam district on Wednesday night.

He said the militants stormed a security check-post in the area, sparking a fierce clash that lasted several hours. Five policemen were killed and six others wounded during the gunbattle.

The militants also suffered casualties but exact figures were not immediately available, the police spokesman added.

Ahmad Khalild, a resident of the area, said the firefight continued until morning. The check-post was established between Khulam disitrict and Qala-i-Zal of Kunduz to prevent rebels’ movement.

He added that the security forces reclaimed the post in the morning. The Taliban have not yet commented in this regard.
