Why my daughter was killed, asks Mangal’s father

KABUL (Pajhwok): Journalist Mina Mangal’s father has asked the government why it could not protect his working daughter.

Mangal, who worked as a television presenter before making a foray into politics, was gunned down in Kabul on Saturday.

“I urge them to protect my other daughters and other women.” Her father told the BBC.

The man claimed losing “an intelligent and active daughter because of a family dispute” an incident that has sparked an outcry from Afghan leaders and rights activists.

The Supreme Court and civil society, including the commission on violence against women, have already demanded a probe into her killing.

In a recent post on Facebook, the journalist said she had received threats and feared for her life, according to women’s rights activist Wazhma Frogh.

“A woman has been killed in daylight because a man thought she deserves to be killed,” women’s rights activist Wazhma Frogh tweeted.

Zalma Kharooty, a female journalist, posted on Facebook: “In a country where my life is in danger as a journalist, I want the government not to show appreciation for our work but to focus on how to protect us.”
