27 handed down jail terms on drug-smuggling charges

KABUL (Pajhwok): Twenty-seven drug smugglers have been sentenced from one to 17 years in jail, a Criminal Justice Task Force (CJTF) official said on Tuesday.

Ahmad Khalid Mowahid, CJTF spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News the convicts had been arrested in connection with 21 drug smuggling cases.

The arrests were made in the past week. They were handed diwn different jail terms by the primary and appellate courts, he said.

The accused had been held with 33 kilograms of heroin, more than 33 kilograms of morphine, 2,222 kilograms of hashish, over 16 kilograms of shisha, 600 kilograms of chemical and 920 kilograms of Tablet-K.

Their cases were referred to the CJTF courts which awarded them different jail sentences, Mowahid added. Eight of the smugglers wanted to traffic heroin via the Kabul Airport to India.
