100 MPs oppose Ghazni division into separate constituencies

KABUL or lower house members on Monday opposed dividing southern Ghazni province into separate constituencies for the upcoming elections and termed it against the law.

The Wolesi Jirga elections were held on October 20 and 21 nationwide except Ghazni and Kandahar provinces. The elections in Kandahar were held a week later.

The Wolesi Jirga elections for Ghazni province are slated for September 28 together with the presidential poll. In Afghanistan, every province is a single electoral constituency.

Earlier, President Ashraf Ghani has tasked his second vice-president Sarwar Danish and first deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Eng. Mohammad Khan with working on a new plan to divide Ghazni into separate electoral constituencies.

On Monday, a motion signed by 100 lawmakers was tabled in the Wolesi Jirga regarding the issue.

The motion, read out by Ali Akbar Jamshidi, a lawmaker from Daikundi province, demanded elections in Ghazni as held in other provinces.

The motion reads, “Dividing Ghazni into separate constituencies is against the law and is double standards treatment and never acceptable to us.”

It added “if the government, for any reason, is seeking to divide Ghazni into separate constituencies, then two provinces must be created in Ghazni in order to hold elections in Jaghuri province which is a key demand of people.”

It asked civil society activist institutions, political figures, international community and UNAMA to prevent regarding the government from making such a decision.
