Civilian casualties declined in June, says CPAG

KABUL in June, an advocacy group said on Monday.

The Civilian Protection Advocacy Group (CPAG) said the only reason for the decline was a fall in suicide attacks in the outgoing month.

CPAG data suggested 63 people were killed and 134 others injured in June when civilian casualties happened just in 11 provinces, where 197 people were killed and wounded.

Five women and six children were among the dead. At least seven women and 16 children were wounded last month, the group said.

Most of the casualties happened in Nangarhar, where 46 civilians were killed and wounded. Kabul stood second in terms of casualties (42). Helmand, where 27 people suffered casualties, emerged third.

Civilian casualties in the first six month of the current year were less than the corresponding period in 2018.

In the first six months of 2019, 1,981 civilians were killed and injured while last year the figure was 2,639.

A coalition of around 20 civil society groups, CPAG called civilian casualties a huge disappointment. The warring parties should avoid violating domestic, humanitarian and Islamic laws during operations.

The group asked parties to the conflict to take more care to ensure the protection of civilians during all kinds of operations.

CPAG also strongly condemn Monday’s complex suicide attack in Kabul. in which many civilians are killed an injured.
