Ghani’s campaign office attacked in Balkh

sMAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Gunmen attacked President Ashraf Ghani’s election campaign office in this capital city of northern Balkh province, an official said on Sunday.

Zabihullah Kakar, director of the president’s State-maker Team campaign’s office in Balkh, told Pajhwok Afghan News that three gun men attacked their office late Saturday night.

He said the ensuing gun-battle lasted 15 minutes between the office’s guards and the armed men. There were no causalities and the assailants managed to escape after their attack. Kakar urged security organs to ensure security of electoral campaigns.

Meanwhile, Munir Farhad, the Balkh governor’s spokesman, also confirmed the attack and said security forces were now investigating it.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.  However, Taliban militants had earlier threatened to target electoral campaigns for the September 28 presidential election.
