MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): Around 20,000 individuals graduate each year from literacy training centres in northern Balkh province, an official said Sunday.
Deputy education director for finance and administration for Balkh province Mohammad Humayun Nabizada told a gathering in Mazar-i-Sharif, the provincial capital, that more than 500,000 people had so far completed literacy courses in Balkh province during the past 18 years.
He said currently 56 present of Afghanistan populations were illiterate and that around 80 percent of people in Balkh province could write and read.
Averagely 20,000 persons graduate each year from literacy training centres in the province, he added.
He said an online system had been set up to add each person to the list of educated people after his and her graduation from a certain course.
He further said around 15,000 people, including 11,000 women, graduated last year from their literacy centres. Mostly poor women took part in such courses, he added.
Nabizada said persons who abandoned school in early age and elderly people were enrolled in these literacy training courses.
Zia Gul, 42, who recently graduated from a literacy centre, told Pajhwok Afghan News that she had completed a nine-month literacy course.
“In the past, I was like a blind person, but now I can help my children learn school’s lessons.”
The mother of two children urged other uneducated people to enrol themselves in such courses in provinces.
A number of other graduates held similar views and called on all uneducated persons to register their names in literacy training courses in the province at earliest possible.
