Khan calls for resumption of US-Taliban talks

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistan.

During a meeting with US Senators Chris Van Hollen and Maggi Hassan in Islamabad, Khan said Washington and Islamabad had a shared interest in advancing peace and stability in Afghanistan.

In the context of the regional situation, the prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s continued commitment to facilitating a political solution in Afghanistan.

The US-Taliban peace talks must resume, Khan stressed, explaining peace in the war-torn country could not be achieved through military means only.

Last month, US President Donald Trump called off negotiations with the militant group. The peace process was declared dead after a Taliban attack in Kabul.

The visiting US senators also called on Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) Gen. Qamar Javed Bajwa at the General Headquarters in the garrison town of Rawalpindi.

The visitors appreciated Pakistan’s efforts to promote regional peace, including stability in Afghanistan. The Afghan reconciliation process also came up for discussion.
