TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): Football and cricket competitions between high school girls’ teams concluded in this capital city of central Uruzgan province on Monday.

The matches played at Malalai Girls’ High School in Tirinkot commenced 20 days back and were organized by the provincial Education Department.

Deputy education director Mohammad Nasim Himmatzai told Pajhwok Afghan News that it was for the first ever time that such competitions were organized among girls in the province.

He said the competitions were aimed at motivating girls towards education and similar competitions would be conducted in future as well.

He said during the past 20 days, the 12 cricket and football teams played against each other.

The games were organized at a time when only three percent of girls have access to education in the province.

Shafiqi, a 9th grade student, who played for first time with other girls, urged the authorities concerned to continue holding such events in future.

A number of other female students held similar views in this regard.
