HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Fuel prices have skyrocketed with the advent of winter in western Herat province, complain residents.
Ghulam Nabi, a resident of Herat City, the provincial capital, told Pajhwok Afghan News that the prices of coal and wood went up in winter in the province despite people’s poor economic situation.
He said people were deeply concerned about the increased prices and were unable to buy such items.
He said one kilogram of gas was sold by 55 afghanis while the same quantity was sold for 45 afghanis three weeks back.
He said four kilograms of coal accounted for 150 afghanis and the same quantity of wood 60 afghanis in the province.
Nasrullah, another resident, accused shopkeepers of artificially increasing the prices and said the local administration was reluctant to take necessary steps and check the price-hike.
Mohammad Tahir, a shopkeer in Herat City, blamed the price hike on powerful individuals who took money from vehicles bringing gas and fuel to Heart on highways.
A number of other residents held similar views and urged the government to take measures agonist those taking money on general highways.
Jilani Farhad, the governor’s spokesman, told Pajhwok that efforts were underway to control the hike in fuel prices across the province.
