Ghori Cement Factory production surges by 70pc

PUL-I-KHUMRI (Pajhwok): The production of Ghori Cement Factory in northern Baghlan province has increased by 70 percent after its takeover by the government, an official said on Thursday.

Riazuddin Sharifi, the cement factory head, told Pajhwok Afghan News a significant increase had been made in production over the past year.

He said the factory’s production had gone up by 70 percent after the signing of a contract for its return to the public sector.

He added the factory produced 120 tonnes of cement in 24 hours during its control by the private sector. But now, it produces 489 tonnes of cement daily.

The official said efforts were underway to jack up the production level to 1,000 tonnes daily by the end of the current year.

Niaz Mohammad, a factory worker, told Pajhwok he had been working for the factory over the past 18 years but he was not happy with his salary.

The worker complained he received low salary as long as the factory was controlled by the private sector. He said his present salary of 13,000 afghanis was not enough to meet his family needs.

The Ghori Cement Factory was handed over to the Afghan Cement Company for 49 years, but the contract was revoked in August 2018 under a presidential decree.
