30 soldiers suffer casualties in Balkh attack

MAZAR-I-SHARIF (Pajhwok): At least 30 Afghan National Army (ANA) soldiers have suffered casualties as a result of a Taliban attack in northern Balkh province.

A security official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Pajhwok Afghan News the militants struck an explosives-packed vehicle into a military base in Balkh district at around 4:30am.

He said some of the 30 soldiers stationed at the base were killed and others wounded in the predawn bombing, which was followed by a coordinated attack, the official added.

Roohullah Ahmadzai, spokesman for the Ministry of Defence in Kabul, confirmed the assault. He put the ANA death toll by seven.

According to Ahmadzai, the assault had been repulsed and the area was under security forces’ control.

Sayed Asmat, a resident of the locality, said the bombing was powerful. “People say 20 ANA soldiers have been killed and 10 others wounded,” he informed.

The Taliban have not yet commented on the deadly incident.
