3 arrested on timber smudging charges in Kunar

ASADABAD (Pajhwok): Intelligence operatives have arrested three individuals for smuggling 254 timber pieces in eastern Kunar province, an official said on Monday.

Deputy Governor Dr. Gul Mohammad Baidar told Pajhwok Afghan News the wood placed in two vehicles was being smuggled to neighbouring Nangarhar province.

He said the detainees had been referred to the attorney office for further investigations. Forest cutting has been a major revenue source for the Taliban and Daesh rebels in the province.

Musa Ishaq, the appellant court head, said around 72 individuals had been introduced to them on timber smuggling charges in the past year.

He said key timber smugglers were yet to be arrested; only some drivers were detained and their cases referred to judicial organs.
