Suspected COVID-19 cases being searched in Herat

HEART CITY (Pajhwok): Local health officials say they have launched a search for finding suspected coronavirus or COVID-19 cases in people in western Herat province.

Dr. Amir Nijad, in charge of national diseases response in the western zone of the country, told Pajhwok Afghan News that they had so far tested a total of 213 people in Herat for coronavirus since last one month and a new positive case was detected.

He warned of increase in suspected coronavirus cases in coming weeks and said there might be more infected people among around 10,000 Afghan refugees who returned from Iran.

He said a three-member team of doctors was recently tasked with finding suspected coronavirus cases in people in the province.

The team will take a sample from suspected person and provide needed awareness and monitor his or her health, he said.

This method can prevent spread of coronavirus and the team would be able to find more cases, he added. Nijad stressed they would try to cover more suspected cases in future.

The search for corona patients is started after a number of parliament members criticized the availability of little resources for testing compared to the number of refugees returning from Iran.

According to reports, 24 people diagnosed positive for coronavirus and 12 people with suspected cases of the virus are under medical scrutiny. Most or 15 of these cases are registered in Herat province.
