100 more Taliban prisoners set to be freed

KABUL prisoners are being released today (Thursday) in compliance with a presidential decree, the National Security Council (NSC) said.

The prisoners’ release would be based on their ages, health condition and remaining prison terms, NSC spokesman Javed Faisal tweeted.

A day earlier, the government released 100 Taliban inmates as part of efforts to advance the peace process and check the Covid-19 spread.

The National Directorate of Security and the Attorney General’s Office thoroughly vetted the prisoners, who have vowed not to return to the battlefield.

Prisoner releases are part of the US-Taliban peace deal that was signed in Doha on February 29. But the process was delayed due to differences between Kabul and the Taliban.
