3 dead as rival tribes clash in Paktia

GARZDEZ (Pajhwok): Two children and a woman were killed when a mortar shell hit their house in Dand Patan district of southeastern Paktia province, an official said Thursday.

Another four people, including two women, were injured in the incident that took place on Wednesday afternoon, the district administrative head, Eid Mohammad Ahmadzai, said.

He said the mortar was fired during a clash between Mangal and Kharotai tribes over ownership of land in Dand Patan district.

He said the dispute over land between the two tribes was 30 years old, but it turned violent since last year.

Ahmadzai accused Pakistan and claimed his suggestion to the Afghan government about construction of a permanent security base fell on deaf ears.

Deputy head of the civil hospital in Gardez, the provincial capital, Dr. Aseel Khan told Pajhwok that the condition of the injured from Dand Patan district was critical and were referred to Kabul.

The governor’s spokesman, Abdullah Hasrat, confirmed the clash between Mangal and Kharotai tribes and said a delegation from the Tribal and Border Affairs Ministry and lawmakers from Paktia had started their efforts to resolve the dispute.

However, he said efforts at resolving the conflict had been unsuccessful so far due to some unilateral actions.
