9 ex-election officials released from jail

KABUL elections, a source said.

The source, who declined to be named, told Pajhwok Afghan News the former electoral officials were released from Pul-i-Charkhi prison on Thursday.

Pajhwok tried to seek comment in this regard from the authorities concerned, but failed to elicit a response.

The Wolesi Jirga or lower house of parliament elections were held on October 20, 2018. The elections had been originally scheduled for Oct 15, 2016.

The nine former Independent Election Commission and Independent Electoral Complaints Commission members had been accused of weak administration and interference with election results.

The primary court of the Justice and Judicial Center for Counter-Corruption had sentenced former election commission chief Gula Jan Abdul Badi Sayyad and six members of the commission — Rafiullah Baidar, Abdul Qadir Qureshi, Hafizullah Hashmi, Maleha Hassan and Wasema Badghisi and former members of IECC including its chief Abdul Aziz Aryayi and two members, Abdul Basir Fayez and Humra Haqmal to five years in prison each.

However, the court reduced the sentence to two years and six months in jail last year, but upheld the verdict for Wasema Badghisi.
