China renews support for Afghan peace process

KABUL cooperation.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Hanif Atmar held a telephonic conversation with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on issues of mutual interest on Monday.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Atmar thanked the government of China for its generous medical support in the fight against Covid-19 and discussed further cooperation in this regard.

Atmar underlined the importance of economic cooperation, Belt and Road Initiative, joint counter terrorism efforts, the Afghan peace process and the role that China could play in creating regional consensus around it.

The minister elaborated on his expectation regarding China’s support for a humanitarian ceasefire, immediate beginning of intra Afghan peace talks and prisoner exchanges between the Taliban and the government.

Wang Yi congratulated Atmar on assuming office as foreign minister and assured him of Beijing’s support on the issues raised.

He also expressed China’s readiness to cooperate on economic issues, counter-terrorism efforts and establishment of regional consensus on the peace process.
