KABUL (Pajhwok): The National Security Council (NSC) said another 102 Taliban prisoners have been released as part of efforts to advance the peace process and check Covid-19 spread.

The Taliban inmates were freed on Monday in compliance with President Ashraf Ghani’s March 11 decree, NSC spokesman Javid Faisal told Pajhwok Afghan News.

“Pursuant to the president’s decree, 102 Taliban prisoners were released yesterday based on their age, health and length of remaining sentence…” he said.

Also on Monday, 98 Taliban prisoners were released from the Pol-i-Charkhi prison in an effort to promote the peace process and contain the coronavirus spread.

The Afghan government has so far released 850 Taliban prisoners from different jails of the country, he added.

Meanwhile, Taliban Qatar political office spokesman Suhail Shaheen tweeted, “In the last 3 days, our 300 prisoners were released from the Afghan government prisons which we welcome. However, it is not enough—the process should be expedited so the prisoners be saved from the Coronavirus and the way be paved for an earliest inception of intra-Afghan negotiations.”

A day earlier, President Ghani’s spokesman SediqSeddiqi said that efforts for bringing peace to the country would fizzle out if the Taliban do not reduce violence.

He urged the insurgent movement to take the coronavirus threat seriously and consider declaring a ceasefire.

The US has been pressing the Afghan government and the Taliban to accelerate prisoner releases to pave the ground for the launch of intra-Afghan talks.

The Taliban have so far freed 107 government prisoners from their jails.
