Migrants’ killing: Kabul, Tehran review probe findings

KABUL (Pajhwok): Kabul and Tehran have discussed an ongoing probe into the alleged killing of Afghan migrants by the Iranian border guards.

Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister Mohsen Baharvand and High Council for National Reconciliation Chairman Dr. Abdullah reviewed results of the investigation in Kabul on Tuesday night.

Heading a high-level delegation, Baharvand underlined the need for bilateral cooperation within the framework of the joint committee to probe the case.

Abdullah referred the good neighborly and cooperative ties between Iran and Afghanistan, saying his country desired a transparent investigation into the tragedy.

Also on Tuesday, the visiting delegation met an Afghan team, led by Foreign Minister Mohammad Hanif Atmar. Atmar sought full cooperation from Iran on the joint probe into the incident.

More than two dozen Afghan citizens, seeking to enter the neighbouring country in quest of jobs, reportedly died after being forced into Harirud River by the Iranian security forces.

Although Iran has vehemently denied involvement in the alleged drowning of the Afghan migrants, it has agreed to discuss the issue with Kabul.
