PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Pakistan recorded its highest number of coronavirus fatalities and infections in a single day on Friday when more than a hundred people died from the disease and over 4,000 individuals tested positive.
With Friday’s confirmed Covid-19 cases, Pakistan’s overall tally surged to 91,365 and the death toll rise to 1,899, provincial and federal officials said.
Sindh has reported 34,889 cases, Punjab 33,144, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 12, 459, Balochistan 5, 776, Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) 3,946, Gilgit-Baltistan 852, and AJK 299.
Punjab reported 22 deaths and a record 2,040 new infections in one day. The province’s death toll went up to 629 and confirmed cases surged to 33,144.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah said 40 more patients lost their lives to the virus in the past 24 hours — the highest death toll in a day since March 19.
Shah added 1,353 new cases had emerged yesterday. His administration has so far conducted 215,860 tests. Of them, 34,889 individuals were diagnosed with the deadly virus.
Twenty more people died from coronavirus in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, taking the province’s tally of fatalities to 541.
Five deaths were reported in Peshawar, four in Abbottabad, two each in Nowshera, Bajaur and Swat and one each in Mardan, Charsadda, Swabi, Malakand and Battagram.
As many as 541 new Covid-19 cases were reported, pushing up the number of confirmed cases in the province to 12,459.
Peshawar recorded 160 new cases and Swat 73. Both districts have so far registered 288 and 52 Covid-19 deaths respectively.
The rest of deaths and infections occurred in Islamabad, Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan. Both fatalities and infection are said to be under-reported.
