Amid pandemic, downsised hajj begins

KABUL ritual in the holy city of Makkah, AFP reported on Wednesday.

To curb the spread of Covid-19, the number of pilgrims has been reduced to 10,000 people already living in Saudi Arabia, where 270,000 individuals have already been infected.

Khalid bin Qarar al-Harbi, the Saudi director of public security, was quoted as saying “There are no security-related concerns in this pilgrimage, but downsizing is to protect pilgrims from the danger of the pandemic.”

During religious rites that are completed over five days in Makkah and its surroundings, pilgrims will have to wear masks and observe social distancing. Medics are sanitising the pilgrims’ luggage

In a bid to curb the chances of infection, authorities have cordoned off the Kaaba this year, barring pilgrims from touching it.
