6 children, mostly girls, killed in Paktia wall collapse

GARDEZ (Pajhwok): At least six children, including five girls, have been killed and a seventh injured in a wall collapse incident in Sayed Karam district of southeastern Paktia province, an official said on Wednesday.

The incident took place following heavy rain in Gariz area late on Tuesday, said Shadam Khan Hilal, Natural Disaster Department head.

He told Pajhwok Afghan News six children, including five girls, were killed and a seventh child injured in the incident.

He said the emergency committee, headed by deputy governor, arrived in the area and donated 50,000 afghanis for each child.

He added, “We all visited the bereaved family and shared the vice president’s sympathies with them.”

Salim, an elder of the family, told Pajhwok three of his children and three of his brother’s children were lost to the wall collapse.

He said one boy and five girls of their family lost their lives in the incident and the injured child was being treated in the provincial hospital. The injured child was also in critical condition.

Mumtaz Karkhel, a member of the Provincial Council, told Pajhwok that the family originally belonged to Mirzakai district but they were living in a rented home in Sayed Karam district.
