Tashkent, Kabul agree on boosting cooperation

KABUL (Pajhwok):  Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hanif Atmar, heading a high-level delegation to Tashkent, has met his Uzbek counterpart Abdulaziz Kamilov.

The two sides discussed bilateral cooperation in different fields and agreed on the signing of a power transmission agreement between Breshna Shirkat and the Uzbek Ministry of Energy.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the two sides have also spoke about expanding cooperation in areas of trade and transport.

They discussed the importance of reconciliation of Afghanistan and the role of Uzbekistan in promoting peace and evolving regional consensus.

While welcoming Atmar, Kamilov discussed Afghanistan’s important position in Uzbekistan’s foreign policy.

He said: “We hope this historic trip will further enhance political and economic cooperation between the two countries and strengthen our relations in the fields of trade, transport, electricity, and energy.”

Kamilov emphasised Uzbekistan’s support for an Afghan- led and Afghan-owned peace process. “We hope to see the immediate start of peace negotiations in Afghanistan.”

Atmar thanked Uzbekistan for its support for the peace process and the position of the Afghan government, and stressed the need for an early start of peace talks and preservation of Kabul’s achievements of the past 19 years.

He assured his Uzbek counterpart the Afghan leadership had a strong will to strengthen and expand relations with Uzbekistan. “We want to improve political, economic and cultural relations with Uzbekistan.”
