Taliban asked to embrace permanent ceasefire

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Civilian Protection Group (CPG) members on Tuesday demanded an end to the ongoing bloodshed and called for prompt ceasefire between the government and the Taliban.

Addressing reporters here, CPC members said if the Taliban were interested in peace, the group should cease hostilities.

They termed the launch of intra-Afghan peace talks in Qatar a good omen and asked both the parties to fully utilize the opportunity of reconciliation.

Jawad Ameed, a civil society activist and CPG member, said the purpose of their press conference was to convey people’s voices for permanent ceasefire.

“We want both the parties to agree to a permanent ceasefire in order to stop the killing of civilians and innocent people.”

Ghulam Farooq Raseb, another civil society activist, said peace talks had begun Qatar, but fighting was underway in every part of Afghanistan.

He said tens of thousands of civilians lost their lives to the decades-old war — a situation not acceptable to people, therefore the Taliban should agree to ceasefire.
