Kabul seeks strategic partnership with Dushanbe

KABUL (Pajhwok): Tajikistan’s President Emomali Rahmon has hailed the launch of intra-Afghan negotiations, promising all-out support from his administration for the peace process

At a meeting with Acting Foreign Minister Hanif Atmar in Dushanbe, Rahmon welcomed the Afghan peace talks and called for stronger trade cooperation.

A statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) on Friday said the Tajik leader also commended Kabul’s principled position on the ongoing peace negotiations in Doha.

“Emomali Rahmon stressed cooperation with Afghanistan is one of the priority areas in Tajikistan’s foreign policy,” the ministry added.

Both sides evinced a keen interest in strengthening bilateral cooperation in the field of science, education, culture, art and information.

The statement said: “The two sides also discussed the implementation of infrastructure projects, trade and transit development, energy transfer and counter-terrorism.”

Controlling organised crime, strengthening cross-border cooperation, expanding cultural ties and the training of Afghan professionals also came up for discussion.

Atmar called for the expansion of bilateral relations to the level of strategic cooperation, underlining deep historical and cultural ties between the two sides.
