JALALABAD (Pajhwok): Civil society.

Lailo has completed intermediate level studies in medical and is currently serving as a teacher in her district. She plans to get higher education in political science and law besides continuing her social activities.

During an exclusive interview with Pajhwok Afghan News, Lailo said she was in class 9th when she got engaged and her father-in-law stopped her from getting education.

She said her husband was illiterate but he always supported her social activities and her work to promote education.

“After marriage, my husband wanted to me to complete my education but my father-in-law did not allow this. We faced many problems even we were expelled from home but my husband supported me in getting to this place,” she said.

Lailo is now working as a teacher at one of Batikot’s girls’ school and is persuading other people to send their daughters to school.

She said she enjoyed public trust and even the district administration approached her for resolution of a case of violence against women.

“There was a family dispute in our village. A married woman was sent to her father’s home by her in-laws and no one dared to resolve this issue. I went to her in-laws and settled the dispute and the woman returned to her husband’s house.”

Lailo said she also wanted to contest Provincial Council elections but the elections were not held and she had to wait.

Batikot is one of Nangarhar’s insecure districts for years but after the establishment of Afghan Local Police, the situation has returned to normalcy.
