GARDEZ (Pajhwok): Negligence on the part of security institutions and lack of coordination between them has resulted in deterioration of the security situation in southeastern Paktia province, a Wolesi Jirga delegation said Thursday.

The security situation in Paktia deteriorated over the past two months with increase in militant activities. Some culverts were blown up during this period and a road connecting Gardez with six districts has been blocked.

Addressing reporters here, the Wolesi Jirga delegation said the security leadership of Paktia was unconcerned about its responsibility and the lack of equipment further deepened the problem.

Naseeb Moqbel, a delegation member, said: “The security leadership is not discharging its responsibility the way required. They have committed negligence and continue to do so, there is no coordination between defence and detective institutions and the central government has not provided them the needed equipment.”

Abdul Malik Zazai, head of the Provincial Council, said they had meetings with security and government officials and the task to follow up pledges made during the meetings was handed over to the Provincial Council.

“Elements behind target attacks want to spread horror and fear among people. On provincial level, we have the responsibility to make attentive to his duty one who commits negligence,” he said.

Police Chief Col. Sultan Dawod Sultan said the Taliban had intensified their attacks but police refrained from counter attacks due to public demand for peace and keeping in mind their feelings.

Ibrahim Ghashtali, a Wolesi Jirga member who was part of the delegation, said the Taliban had intensified their attacks and by closing roads they multiplied people’s problems, adding that the group wanted to gain more privilege on the negotiating table by waging more attacks.

He said: “The main victims of this conflict are people, the sacrifices people give will assert no pressure on both teams.”
