Senate splits over Saleh taking Kabul security charge

KABUL or Senate members on Sunday termed the handing over of Kabul security to first vice President Amrullah Saheh as an insult to the generals but others called it an important step towards ensuring the city’s security.

Saleh has taken charge of Kabul’s security for a few weeks in compliance with President Ashraf Ghani’s directives.

The VP wrote on his Facebook page: “I don’t have anything called compassion for criminals in my dictionary in terms of enforcing the law to ensure public security.”

The Meshrano Jirga or upper house of parliament at today’s session discussed the issue.

Mohammad Alokozai, a lawmaker from southern Helmand province, said: “It is a shame that the responsibility of security of one province is entrusted to the vice president, this shows that you do not trust the generals, if the responsibility of security of Kabul is entrusted to Saleh, the responsibility of security of Helmand should be given to Sarwar Danish and responsibility of other provinces be handed over to the “Cabinet members.”

He called the transfer of Kabul security responsibility to Amrullah Saheh as an insult to the country’s generals, saying in a such a scenario, the interior minister and Kabul police chief should be fired.

He said Helmand was burning for the last nine days but the government was silent.

He warned if the government did not pay attention to Helmand current security situation, the people of the province would approach the Taliban.

Mohammad Ajan Mangal, another lawmaker from southeastern Paktia province, said: “It is shameful that the country’s first vice is taking the security charge of Kabul as it does not suit him, if the minister of interior and police chief are not able to do their job, then they have to resign.”

A number of other lawmakers held similar views but some others termed Saleh’s step as important and added that the VP has enough experience in security sector.

Gulalai Akbari, a lawmaker from northeastern Badakhshan province, said: “First vice president Amrullah Saheh has experience and he will only observer the situation. It is time all of us should work for the country’s security.”

Farhad Sakhi, a lawmaker from Kabul, expressed similar views and added that Amrullah Saheh was an experienced person.

Mohammad Alam Ezdiyar, first deputy chairman, welcomed giving Kabul security responsibility to Amrullah Saleh and urged political figures and people to cooperate with security organs to ensure Kabul security.

Meshrano Jirga chairman Fazal Hadi Muslimyar said nothing about the issue, but urged the authorities concerned to take measures for the country’s security.
