8 killed, 12 injured in Herat jail tussle

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): A clash between prisoners and police inside the central jail in western Herat province left eight people dead and a dozen more injured, sources said on Thursday.

A source at the central prison in Herat City, the provincial capital, said the clash broke out last night after police attempted to search the cells for drugs and knives.

In order to calm the resisting prisoners, police resorted to firing in the air, but the move further intensified the clash, he said.

Heart public health department spokesman Mohammad Rafique Sherzai told Pajhwok that eight dead bodies and 12 injured had been evacuated to the zonal hospital from the jail.

The central jail and local officials have so far not commented about the deadly clash.

However, Herat ambulance department head Ibrahim Mohammadi said they shifted 10 injured prisoners to hospital from the jail and three of them were in critical condition.

The clash comes a week after a prisoner at the central jail hanged himself to death.
