Miller sees improvement in Afghan situation

KABUL (Pajhwok): US special operations forces will be the last troops to leave Afghanistan, acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller says.

To oust the Taliban regime after the 9/11 attacks on the Unite States, special operation forces were the first deployed to Afghanistan about two decades back.

America’s acting secretary of defense, who met US forces and military leadership in Afghanistan, said: “I went there on purpose because I’m going to get the real deal from these guys.”

Christopher Miller was quoted as a saying: “Their smart-ass comments and insights led me to the conclusion we’re in a good place.”

He visited Camp Morehead south of Kabul, where the special operations forces train Afghan commandos, to listen to troops’ views on the war.

According to Stars and Stripes, the visiting dignitary met NATO and US forces’ commander Gen. Scott Miller and President Ashraf Ghani.

The US commitment to that Afghanistan’s security and the ongoing withdrawal of about 2,500 US soldiers by mid-January came under discussion at the meetings.

The defense secretary and Gen. Miller discussed in detail the work special operations troops would be doing in the next couple of months.

Ghani briefed Miller on the steps his government had taken for peace. He asked that the other side to show its clear intentions.

The US and Taliban signed a peace pact in Doha in February this year. Under the deal, all US forces will exit Afghanistan by May 2021 if the Taliban meet conditions including a reduction in violence leading to a ceasefire and peace talks with Kabul.
