Noted radio journalist gunned down in Ghor

FEROZKOH (Pajhwok): The day the New Year dawned, a noted radio journalist was gunned down by unidentified assailants in the capital of western Ghor province.

Bismillah Adil Aimaq, head of Radio Sada-i-Ghor and civil society activist, was shot dead in a village close to Feroz Koh on Friday

Meanwhile, the deputy governor confirmed the murder of Aimaq, who had previously escaped unhurt in at least two gun attacks.

Aimaq’s killing was the latest a spate of targeted assassinations. A week earlier, Rahmatullah Nekzad, head of the journalists’ union in Ghazni province, was killed by gunmen outside his home.

Ghor police spokesman Nek Mohammad said the gunmen riding motorcycles managed to flee the scene. A hunt for the killers is ongoing.

In the past 20 years, 119 Afghan journalists and foreign news correspondents have been killed in the conflict-devastated country.

At least six journalists have been killed in the line of duty in Afghanistan In the past two months, according to local media protection organisations.

There has been no claim yet of responsibility for the shooting, with the Taliban moving swiftly to deny their involvement in the incident.
