Herat Norm dept head, officials suspended on graft charges

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Attorney General Office (AGO) on Saturday announced suspending the head and some officials of the Norm and Standards department of western Herat province over alleged misuse of authority and embezzling 23.9 million afghanis.

In a statement, the top prosecutor’s office said its investigations showed officials of the Norm and Standards Department of western Herat had misused authority and embezzled 2,395,300 afghanis.

The AGO said the head of the Norm and Standards Department, the general manager of construction materials lab, laboratory technicians, certification director and the financial and administrative director of the department had been referred to the Public Security Court of the Herat appellant court.

The AGO demanded the court apply articles 389, 391, 403 of the Penal Code, which recommend more than 10 years of imprisonment.

The statement added that the AGO had conducted a comprehensive investigation into the case after receiving complaints from businessmen about corruption in the Norm and Standards Department of Herat Province.

The suspects have been suspended and their names put on exit control list, the AGO said.

The AGO emphasized it was committed to the people of Afghanistan in the fight against corruption and would investigate all such cases impartially, independently and on the basis of documents, evidence in the light of the country’s applicable laws.
