KABUL (Pajhwok): Ziaul Haq Amarkhel, head of the Hezb-i-Islami Afghanistan-government commission on the peace agreement says 1,164 prisoners of the Hekmatyar-led party have been freed so far.
HIA leader Gulbadin Hekmatyar, addressing a gathering here on Sunday, accused the government of not releasing the party’s prisoners under the peace pact with the Ghani administration.
Hizb-i-Islami and the peace council signed the peace agreement on September 22, 2016. Based on the deal, 1,164 prisoners were released in the solar year 1399 as a result of efforts by the joint commission. Only 74 prisoners linked to the party are yet to be released.
The joint commission had been trying to fully implement the peace agreement between the government and the Hezb-i-Islami, the official said.
Amarkhel added the Hezb-i-Islami had submitted a list of 1,200 prisoners to the joint peace commission. With the government’s cooperation, the panel assessed the list, so far 1,174 HIA inmates have been set free.
The commission head said 838 prisoners were released from Pul-i-Charkhi and Bagram prisons and 128 inmates from provincial jails, with 154 walking out on serving their sentences.
At last 40 key HIA inmates and four other prisoners have also been released. The government and HIA had responsibility towards implementing the peace agreement, he said, blaming both sides for failing to enforce parts of the deal.
