Khalilzad due in Islamabad for talks on Afghan peace process

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Amid stepped-up efforts for peace in the neighbouring country, the US special representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation is expected to arrive in Islamabad today (Monday).

As part of his latest swing through the region, Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad would share America’s new peace plans with Pakistan’s civil and military leaders.

During his visits to Qatar and Afghanistan, the veteran diplomat spoke about a US proposal for a ‘participatory government’ in Kabul — an option that was instantly scorned by President Ashraf Ghani and the Taliban.

In Doha, Khalilzad met Taliban’s political representatives and members of the Afghan government’s team on how to accelerate the snail-paced peace negotiations.
