Taliban close girls’ schools in 2 Logar districts

PUL-I-ALAM (Pajhwok): Taliban insurgents have closed girls’ schools in two districts of central Logar Province and have issued death threat to violators of their order, an official said on Tuesday.

Education Department spokesperson Shapour Arab told Pajhwok Afghan News the Taliban had ordered closed girls’ schools from class fourth to 12th in the Charkh and Baraki Barak districts.

He said a total 30 girls’ school had been closed since last 10 days, adding that efforts were underway to reopen them.

“The Taliban issued death threat to school officials, teachers and students against coming to the school. They warned the school buildings to be torched in case of violating orders.”

According to Arab, the matter had been shared with the governor’s office to be resolved. Efforts are also underway to reopen the schools.

Women Affairs Director Shema Zargar said thousands of girls would be deprived of education if the government did not take steps to reopen the schools.

“Tens of girls from Baraki Barak and Charkh district established contact with us demanding the reopening of their schools,” she said.

Baraki Barak District Chief Ahmad Wais Abdul Rahimzai said the Taliban had closed girls schools in the district from the past 10 days.

He said efforts were on to reopen the schools with support of tribal elders and elderly persons.

Taliban Spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said he would let Pajhwok Afghan News know after collecting necessary information from relevant individuals about schools closure.
