5 security personnel killed, 6 wounded in Herat attacks

HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): Nearly a dozen security personnel have suffered casualties as a result of a car bombing and a highway blast in western Herat province, officials said on Thursday.

Governor Syed Abdul Wahid Qatali told Pajhwok Afghan news the car bomb exploded in Shindand district of the province on Wednesday night.

He said the Taliban militants, having failed in face-to-face fighting with the security forces, had resorted to car bombings in their fight against the government.

Qatali added insurgents and National Directorate of Security (NDS) clashed after the blast. As a result, four NDS personnel were killed and four other wounded.

Separately, the governor said, one police officer was killed and two others were wounded in an explosion in the province.

Local officials said armed militants conducted a bomb attack on a police checkpoint in the Kamarkulagh area on the Herat-Torghundi highway.

Mohammad Rafiq Sherzai, spokesman for Department of Public Health, said one dead body and two wounded people were brought to hospital. The blast happened at around 7am.

Abdul Ahad Walizada, police spokesman, confirmed the incident and said their recovery teams were at the site and they would later share further details.

No group immediately claimed responsibility for the attacks.
