75 Taliban killed, a dozen wounded in Arghandab raids

KANDAHAR CITY (Pajhwok): Security officials in southern Kandahar province claim 75 militants have been killed and a dozen others wounded as a result of air and ground operations by the security forces in Arghandab district.

Col. Khwaja Yahya Alvi, spokesman for the 205th Atal military corps told Pajhwok Afghan News the security forces launched raids in Arghandab with support from the Afghan Air Force on Saturday night.

He said 75 insurgents, including suicide bombers, were killed and 12 others wounded during the raids. Taliban’s ammunition, vehicles and weapons were also destroyed.

In a statement, the 03 Unit of the National Directorate of Security (NDS), said 70 insurgents were killed in Arghandab district. including 10 suicide bombers.

A source in 03 Unit, wishing anonymity, told Pajhwok Afghan News insurgents were planning attacks on the district office complex with two explosives-packed Humvee vehicles Saturday night.

The source added F16 jets struck the insurgents in the Tabin area of Arghandab, killing 70 militants, including 10 suicide bombers. The rebels’ tanks, vehicles and ammunition were also destroyed.

The source said civilians and security personnel suffered no casualties during the overnight raids.

Local security officials claimed the Taliban suffered heavy casualties and the district would soon be cleaned of insurgents.

One source revealed a commander of Taliban’s Red Unit was among those killed during the operations.

He said security forces were currently demining the area. Displaced families would soon return to their houses, he promised.

However, the Taliban have not yet commented regarding the raids in Arghandab.

On Friday night also, raids were conducted in Arghandab district and destroyed an explosives-packed car. At least 11 Taliban were killed.

The security forces and Taliban have been clashing in Arghandab, Zherai and Panjwai districts for the past six months.

As a result of clashes, thousands of families have been displaced and forced into migration to Kandahar City — the provincial capital.
