TIRINKOT (Pajhwok): Hundreds people in central Uruzgan province held a gathering in support of the government and called for peace on Saturday.

The gathering in government support comes amid intensified conflict related violence in the provincial capital, with up to 3,000 families fleeing homes in districts

The gathering, which was attended by provincial officials as well as tribal elders, religious scholars, civil society activists and youth, called on both sides to lay down their arms and make peace.

Tribal elder Khudai Rahim Khan said that for years, Uruzgan had been engulfed in flames of war, with houses destroyed, gardens burnt and people suffering casualties.

He said the younger generation was being killed every day and the number of widows and orphans was increasing.

Religious scholar Maulvi HamdullahAbdali said the benefits of war went to other people and the loss to the Afghan people.

He added that the ongoing war in the country had no Sharia legitimacy and that in addition to Afghan religious scholars; the world’s leading religious scholars had also issued fatwas condemning it.

The participants called on the Afghan government and the Taliban to take advantage of the ongoing peace talks to find a way to stop the bloodshed and pave the way for lasting peace.
