District mayor jailed, revenue officer fined in Nimroz

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Attorney General Office (AGO) on Monday said a mayor and an officer of Dilaram district of southwestern Nimroz province have been sentenced to prison terms over illegally taking money from drivers.

A statement from AGO received by Pajhwok Afghan News said that former Dilaram mayor Shah Nawaz and current mayor of the district, Samiullah and revenue officer of the district municipality Hamayon were involved in collecting money illegally from drivers in collusion with each other.

The case was followed after complaints from a number of drivers in the district and the case had been referred to the appellate court of Nimroz for further investigations, the source said.

The statement said that Hamayon, revenue officer of Dilaram municipality, was arrested red-handed along with 84,000 afghanis during an operation by detective personnel and his case was referred to appellate jurisdiction of the district.

The source said that investigations show Samiullah, current mayor of Dilaram, was aware about his revenue officer who was collecting money from drivers under the excuse of urban services.

Former mayor of the district, Shah Nawaz, was also found complicit in the crime as he had illegally employed Hamayon as revenue officer, the source said.

The primary court has sentenced Hamayon to a year in prison, fined Shah Nawaz 60,000 afghanis but Samiullah was acquitted for lack of enough evidence, the source said.
