10 prisoners extradited to Iran, says AGO

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Attorney General’s Office on Thursday announced extraditing 10 Iranian prisoners to Tehran on the basis of an agreement between the two countries.

According to a statement issued by the Attorney General’s Office, the detainees were transferred to their country through Hamid Karzai International Airport on Thursday.

The source added that the detainees had been kept in Pul-i-Charkhi and Bagram prisons under various Afghan laws and they were handed over to the representative of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Kabul after approval of the Ministry of Justice.

The detainees were handed over in presence senior civil and military officials to Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Deputy chief of staff at the Presidential Palace Mohammad Hashem Stanekzai on the occasion said the prisoners were extradited to their country based on a memorandum between Afghanistan and Iran.

Stanekzai said efforts were being made to bring home Afghans detained in Iran in accordance with the memorandum.

Meanwhile, the Consul General of the Iranian Embassy in Kabul thanked the Government of Afghanistan and the relevant authorities for their efforts in repatriating Iranian prisoners, adding that they were working to speed up the transfer of prisoners between the two countries.

It is worth mentioning that a number of Afghan prisoners, who had been imprisoned in Iran recently, were handed over to the Afghan government after going through legal process.
