Taliban leaders, Afghan politicians meet in Iran

KABUL (Pajhwok): A number of Afghan politicians and a Taliban delegation met in Iran on Wednesday on recent developments in the country, the movement’s spokesman said..

Dr. Mohammad Naeem tweeted that a Taliban delegation, led by the group;s senior negotiator Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai, visited Iran in response to an official invitation from the neighbouring country.

He said the team would discuss key issues with Iranian officials besides meeting a number of Afghan politicians on recent developments in the country and the peace process, he added.

Naeem did not name the Afghan politicians but other sources said a delegation from Kabul, led by former vice-president, Yunus Qanuni, had arrived to Tehran two days ago.

One source said the delegation included Salam Rahimi, Karim Khurram, Ershad Ahmadi, Zahir Wahdat and Mohammad Ullah Batash.

Another Taliban spokesman, Zabihullah Mujahid, posted a video of the meeting and said the event was attended by Taliban,, Afghan politicians and Iranian officials.

Afghan politicians and Taliban representatives also previously met in Russia, Qatar and Pakistan.
